Magical Weighted Blankets
Also known as “Gravity Blankets”, these blankets have used therapeutically to help treat the symptoms of kids with anxiety, ADHD, or other sensory processing disorders, they can also be helpful for any child who needs a better night’s sleep 💤 It focuses on the sensory experience during sleep, providing a constant pressure that relaxes, reduces anxiety and transitions kid (or adults!) to sleeping mode!
So how does it actually work?
The benefits of a weighted blanket is scientifically linked to Deep Touch Pressure Therapy – an experience that releases the neurotransmitter serotonin, a natural mood stabilizer that helps to reduce anxiety and create an overall feeling of calm. Many believe that it is particularly beneficial for children with ADHD, ASD and anxiety. Serotonin is also important in the creation of melatonin, the “sleepy” hormone that makes us fall asleep, which is why many occupational therapists have been using them to help their patients experience a full, deep sleep 😇
Just like adults, better sleep in children leads to better focus, better learning & better mood! Especially if you are raising children with special needs, the increased serotonins is effective in calming meltdowns and improves “stimming” behaviour, and makes transitions easier!
It may be hard for a child to get used to the extra pounds on their body, so it’s best to demonstrate and and make it fun when introducing it to your child. You may want to try it on their little feet first, and slowly work your way up. You may also want to introduce it during story-time, to get them used to the new sensory experience 🤗
